7 Free Family Activities in Eugene & Springfield

1. Spend an Afternoon at the Library

Eugene and Springfield libraries are some of the easiest places to find free family fun year-round. Depending on the week, families can find storytimes, crafts, LEGO activities, games, STEM programs, teen events and other drop-in activities.

Parent tip: Library events change throughout the month, so check the calendar before you head out.

➡️ Check the Macaroni KID Eugene event calendar for upcoming library events.

2. Find a Free Local Event

You don’t have to wait for a big festival to find something happening around town. Eugene and Springfield regularly have free library programs, community celebrations, art events, park activities and family-friendly pop-ups.

We add as many free and low-cost family events as we can find to the Macaroni KID Eugene calendar each week.

3. Pick a Playground and Let Them Run

Eugene and Springfield have plenty of parks that can turn an ordinary afternoon into an outing. Pack snacks, grab the scooters or bikes and let the kids burn off some energy.

A few easy options to put on your list:

  • Umso Park in north Eugene
  • Santa Clara Community Park
  • Bethel Community Park in west Eugene

Or make it a mission to try a park you’ve never visited before.

➡️ Browse our Eugene + Springfield family guides, including the Parks & Playgrounds Guide.

4. Explore Dorris Ranch in Springfield

For an outing that feels like a mini adventure without leaving town, head to Dorris Ranch in Springfield.

The 268-acre historic orchard and natural area has paved, gravel and natural-surface trails, picnic areas and plenty of room to explore. Families can walk through the orchard, look for wildlife or connect to the Middle Fork Path for a longer adventure.

Parent tip: There are restrooms and parking at the ranch, and the park is open from dawn to dusk.

➡️ Learn more about Dorris Ranch.

5. Visit the Museum for Free on the First Friday

The University of Oregon’s Museum of Natural and Cultural History offers free admission on the first Friday of every month.

Kids can explore Oregon fossils, ecosystems, archaeology and cultural history, making this one of those rare free outings that works especially well when you want something indoors.

➡️ Check upcoming Free First Friday details.

We also add museum free days and other special admission opportunities to the Macaroni KID calendar whenever we find them.

6. Turn an Ordinary Walk Into a Scavenger Hunt

You don’t need a destination at all. Give everyone a quick scavenger-hunt list and head around your neighborhood, a park or downtown.

Try looking for:

  • A red door
  • A funny mailbox
  • A dog wearing something
  • A bird
  • A heart shape
  • A street sign with your child’s first initial
  • The very best stick you can find

Bonus: Let the kids make the list for the grown-ups next time.

7. Have a Free “Yes Hour” at Home

A whole Yes Day can get... ambitious. A Yes Hour is much safer. 😂

Give the kids a short menu of free choices and let them decide what happens for the next hour:

  • Build a blanket fort
  • Have a family dance party
  • Play board games
  • Watch a movie together
  • Bake something with ingredients you already have
  • Have breakfast for dinner
  • Make an obstacle course

Sometimes the easiest family memory is the one that happens right at home.
