A Love Letter To Eugene

By Colleen Elliott, Publisher, Macaroni KID Eugene February 13, 2026

Dear Eugene,

Like any town, you have your positives and your negatives—but there is nowhere else I’d rather call home. Here are ten reasons I love you, Eugene.

  1. The abundance of local coffee shops. There’s truly no shortage of amazing places to grab a cup. From cozy corners to bustling morning stops, local coffee is part of the rhythm of life here.
  2. The parks and outdoor walking spaces. We’re spoiled with options. The new Santa Clara Park is quickly becoming a favorite, and summer walks to Golden Gardens feel like a seasonal tradition.
  3. The view from the top of Skinner Butte. Being able to see so far in every direction is grounding—it’s a reminder to pause and take it all in.
  4. The energy of game days. Being so close to the university means the excitement spills into every corner of town, and that buzz is something special.
  5. 5th Street Market. It’s truly a gem. The Christmas lights are always magical, and the falling “snow” is such a joyful surprise every year.
  6. The Scandinavian Festival. Not quite Eugene, but close enough—and always worth the trip. The food alone is reason to go.
  7. The people. Community here can take time to find, but once you do, those connections run deep and last.
  8. The library. How could I not include the library? From programs to resources to simple quiet moments, it’s a place that keeps us coming back week after week.
  9. The weather. Summers rarely get too hot for too long, winters are mild, and the rain is just enough—perfect for kids and puddle jumping.
  10. The cultural festivals. Throughout the year, they offer such meaningful ways to introduce children to new cultures and experiences.

I moved to Eugene nine years ago. I got married here. I started my family here. And I plan to lay my roots here.

Eugene, you are truly something special. 💚
